Kids at Home

Scenario 1 : Classroom

- Kids in educational institutions i.e schools, tuitions and classes, etc

Kids forget to drink water most of the times when in school unless they feel very thirsty.

arrow black.png

Their ability to drink water is very high as the bottle is right beside them but the motivation is very low as they dont feel thirsty enough to drink water

fogg's model classroom.png
habit loop.png

- Not feeling thirsty enough
- immersion in their studies
- Not wanting to go to the washroom

Not seeing their peers drink water and hence don’t consider it important

- Drinking very less water
- Returning home with bottle 3/4th or half full

- No disturbance or pause in the activity they are doing
- Less pee and hence lee going to washroom

Theory of Planned Behaviour

BEHAVIORAL BELIEFS

Drinking less or no water saves my time while doing an activity and also eliminates the need of using the restroom

ATTITUDE

Drinking less water is not causing me any harm as such. And also I can drink other drinks and juices, its not always necessary to drink water all the time

NORMATIVE BELIEFS

I don’t see everyone drinking water all the time, so why should I ?

SUBJECTIVE NORM

Not everyone is always drinking only water all the time

INTENTION

To drink water only when needed

BEHAVIOR

Tend to drink less amount of water through the day

Vector 6_edited.png
Vector 6_edited.png
arrow black.png

CONTROL BELIEFS

Going to get the water bottle or the water filter is too time consuming. That's why sometimes I don't feel like drinking water

PRECONCIEVED BEHAVIORAL CONTROL

Its alright if I skip drinking or drink a little less water if I am busy with something else

Problem Statement

Kids tend to drink insufficient amount of water because of forgetfulness, lack of motivation and awareness about drinking water.

Shortlisting 2 Concepts

Vector 13.png
Vector 13.png
Vector 13.png

After brainstorming around 15 concepts, 2 were shortlisted. The 2 shortlisted concepts were further improvised, each of their mid fidelities were created and a User Testing with 12 users was to finalize a concept based on the Stakeholder belief, Motivation, barriers and Feasibility. The criterias for choosing a concept were that how PERSUASIVE, INTERACTIVE and PLAYFUL the design is.

Remaking the entire Model

Experimenting with Ear; Adding Button

FINAL DESIGN

Introducing Morrie

An elephant shaped container for encouraging the toddlers to drink water regularly.

MORRIE.png

As soon as the child presses the button on the trunk water comes out of the trunk and Morrie flaps its ears.

REWARD - The child is supposed to empty the container by the end of the day. Once the tank is completely empty (the moisture sensor detects the emptied water level), the child will be get to hear an interesting bedtime elephant tale from the container.

NEW HABIT LOOP.png
  • Kids get their own container kept in their vicinity and reach

  • Wanting to interact with the container

  • desire to hear a new bedtime story

  • wanting to pet the elephant

  • wanting to finish the container they own

Internal Trigger

  • The elephant does not recite a story until the water is emptied

  • The elephant motivates the kid to drink more water

Internal Trigger

  • Getting to hear a new bedtime story whenever the container is emptied

Reward

  • Drinking water from the container

  • Petting the elephant

Action

New Habit Loop Diagram

Octalysis Framework

Epic Meaning

Accomplishment

Since it is their own container,
the child believes that they are responsible for finishing it

octalysis.png

Each story is new and fresh, and child is automatically engaged with the container.

The child would be curious to hear a new story every time the water is emptied.

Empowerment

Unpredictability

Social Influence

The child feels accomplished when they finish the water container on their own. The child gets to hear a story as a reward after accomplishing the task of finishing water.

As the water container is owned by the child, they feel the responsibility to finish it by the end of the day

Ownership

The container recites stories only when it is emptied, hence the kid wants to finish the water inside as soon as possible to hear a new story.

Why an elephant?

Elephants are symbolism of true friendship and their trunk is associated with water.

Their unique build and shape grabs a kid's attention easily.

Elephants also hold a strong role in the storytelling culture, be it ‘Panchatantra’ or even bedtime stories. Thus the children can connect to it more
